KRTAP12-4

Description

The KRTAP12-4 (keratin associated protein 12-4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP12-4 is a protein found in the hair cortex, where it forms an interfilamentous matrix surrounding hair keratin intermediate filaments. This matrix is crucial for the structural integrity of the hair shaft, providing rigidity and resistance. KRTAP12-4 contributes to this function by extensively cross-linking with hair keratins through disulfide bonds, facilitated by its abundance of cysteine residues.

KRTAP12-4 is also known as KRTAP12.4.
