KRTAP12-3

Description

The KRTAP12-3 (keratin associated protein 12-3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP12-3, also known as High sulfur keratin-associated protein 12.3, is a component of the interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. This matrix surrounds hair keratin intermediate filaments, contributing to the structural integrity and resistance of the hair shaft. KRTAP12-3, along with other keratin-associated proteins, forms extensive disulfide bonds with cysteine residues in hair keratins, strengthening the hair structure. It plays a vital role in the formation of the rigid and resistant hair shaft by creating a robust network within the hair cortex.

KRTAP12-3 is also known as KRTAP12.3.
