It forms part of the interfilamentous matrix surrounding keratin intermediate filaments, contributing to the hair's rigidity and resistance. This protein achieves this by extensively cross-linking with keratin through disulfide bonds, utilizing its abundance of cysteine residues.

KRTAP11-1 is also known as HACL-1, HACL1, KAP11.1.
