KRTAP1-3

Description

The KRTAP1-3 (keratin associated protein 1-3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP1-3 is a hair keratin-associated protein (KRTAP) that contributes to the formation of the hair shaft. It forms part of an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex, where it interacts with hair keratin intermediate filaments. This interaction is crucial for creating a rigid and resistant hair shaft. KRTAP1-3 achieves this by extensively cross-linking with cysteine residues present in hair keratins through disulfide bonds. KRTAP1-3 is classified as a high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratin, a category of proteins essential for the structural integrity of the hair shaft.

KRTAP1-3 is also known as KAP1.2, KAP1.3, KAP1.6, KAP1.8A, KAP1.8B, KAP1.9, KRTAP1.3.
