KRT23

Description

The KRT23 (keratin 23) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 23 is a protein encoded by the KRT23 gene in humans. It belongs to the keratin family, which are intermediate filament proteins essential for the structural integrity of epithelial cells. Keratins are categorized into cytokeratin and hair keratin. Type I cytokeratins, like the one encoded by KRT23, are acidic proteins that pair with type II keratins to form heterotypic chains. Genes encoding type I cytokeratins are clustered on chromosome 17q12-q21.

KRT23 is also known as CK23, HAIK1, K23.
