KLF17 is a transcription repressor protein that binds to the promoter regions of specific genes, effectively silencing their expression. This protein acts as a negative regulator, hindering epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis in breast cancer. Its specific binding to the 5'-CACCC-3' sequence within the promoter of ID1, a crucial metastasis regulator in breast cancer, results in the suppression of ID1 expression. Additionally, KLF17 is likely a germ cell-specific transcription factor, playing significant roles in the differentiation of spermatids and the development of oocytes.
