IZUMO4

Izumo4: A Unique and Essential Protein

Description:

Izumo4, also known as CD93, is a surface protein expressed on the surface of immune cells, including lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and plays a crucial role in immune cell function and regulation.

Associated Diseases:

Izumo4 has been linked to several diseases, including:

  • Autoimmune diseases: Izumo4 is involved in the regulation of immune responses. Dysregulation of Izumo4 expression or function can contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
  • Infectious diseases: Izumo4 acts as a co-receptor for HIV-1 and Dengue virus, facilitating their entry into immune cells. It also plays a role in the immune response against other infections, such as tuberculosis and malaria.
  • Cancer: Izumo4 has been found to be expressed on certain types of cancer cells, such as melanoma and breast cancer. Its expression may be associated with disease progression and immune evasion by cancer cells.

Did you Know ?

In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation and pain, Izumo4 expression on immune cells is often decreased. This suggests that Izumo4 deficiency may contribute to the development of the disease.
