IZUMO1

Izumo1: A Multifaceted Marker with Implications in Fertility and Disease

Description

Izumo1 (IZUMO1) is a protein encoded by the IZUMO1 gene in humans. It is a transmembrane protein expressed on the surface of sperm and plays a crucial role in fertilization. Izumo1 forms a complex with another protein called Juno (JUNO), which is located on the egg's surface. This Izumo1-Juno interaction facilitates the binding and fusion of the sperm and egg membranes, enabling fertilization.

Associated Diseases

1. Infertility:

  • Defects in the IZUMO1 gene can lead to male infertility.
  • Mutations in Izumo1 disrupt its interaction with Juno, hindering sperm binding and fertilization.

2. Autoimmune Disorders:

  • Izumo1 has also been linked to certain autoimmune diseases, such as:
    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
    • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • In these disorders, Izumo1 may play a role in regulating immune responses and preventing tissue damage.

3. Cancer:

  • Izumo1 is highly expressed in some types of cancer, including:
    • Melanoma
    • Colorectal cancer
    • Breast cancer
  • Its overexpression can promote tumor growth and metastasis.

Did you Know ?

  • In a study of over 1,000 infertile men, approximately 15% had mutations in the IZUMO1 gene.
