Description

The IRF2 (interferon regulatory factor 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

IRF2, encoded by the IRF2 gene, is a member of the interferon regulatory transcription factor (IRF) family. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of IRF1-mediated transcriptional activation of interferons alpha and beta and other genes that rely on IRF1 for activation. However, IRF2 also functions as a transcriptional activator of histone H4. IRF2 has been shown to interact with BRD7, EP300, and PCAF.

IRF2 binds to the upstream regulatory region of type I IFN and IFN-inducible MHC class I genes (the interferon consensus sequence (ICS)) and represses their expression. It also acts as an activator for several genes, including H4 and IL7. IRF2 constitutively binds to the ISRE promoter to activate IL7. IRF2 is involved in cell cycle regulation by binding the site II (HiNF-M) promoter region of H4 and activating transcription during cell growth. IRF2 antagonizes IRF1 transcriptional activation.

IRF2 is also known as IRF-2.
