SRP72

Description

The SRP72 (signal recognition particle 72) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

SRP72 is a component of the signal recognition particle (SRP) complex, a ribonucleoprotein complex that plays a crucial role in the cotranslational targeting of secretory and membrane proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The SRP complex interacts with the signal sequence of nascent proteins, guiding them towards the ER membrane. This targeting process involves the interaction of the SRP complex with the SRP receptor (SR), which is anchored in the ER. The interaction of SRP and SR leads to a compaction of the SR and GTPase rearrangement, driving the cotranslational translocation of the protein into the ER. Furthermore, SRP72, in the presence of SRP68, can bind to the signal recognition particle RNA (7SL RNA), although this interaction is characterized by low affinity. It is hypothesized that the SRP complex might participate in elongation arrest during protein translation.

SRP72 is also known as BMFF, BMFS1, HEL103.
