SLC10A2

Description

The SLC10A2 (solute carrier family 10 member 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 13.

SLC10A2, also known as ileal sodium/bile acid cotransporter (ASBT/IBAT), is a protein that transports bile acids in the intestine. It's most active in the ileum, where it helps absorb bile acids back into the body, a process known as enterohepatic circulation. SLC10A2 is a target for medications under development to treat constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

SLC10A2 plays a crucial role in the sodium-dependent reabsorption of bile acids from the small intestine, transporting both conjugated and unconjugated bile acids like cholate and taurocholate. It also contributes to bile acid conservation by transporting them in renal proximal tubules. SLC10A2 collaborates with other transporters like NTCP, OST, and BSEP to ensure efficient bile acid recycling during enterohepatic circulation.

SLC10A2 is also known as ASBT, IBAT, ISBT, NTCP2, PBAM, PBAM1.
