RPS28
Description
The RPS28 (ribosomal protein S28) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.
RPS28 is a protein encoded by the RPS28 gene in humans. It is a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit, which is one of the two subunits that make up ribosomes, the organelles responsible for protein synthesis. RPS28 belongs to the S28E family of ribosomal proteins and is located in the cytoplasm. There are multiple pseudogenes of this gene dispersed throughout the genome.
RPS28 is a component of the small ribosomal subunit, which is responsible for protein synthesis in the cell. It is also part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, the first precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. During the assembly of the SSU processome in the nucleolus, RPS28 associates with other ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone, and other ribosomal proteins to facilitate RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements, and cleavage. RPS28 also participates in the targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome.
