IER3

Description

The IER3 (immediate early response 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

IER3 (Radiation-inducible immediate-early gene IEX-1) is a protein that protects cells from Fas- or tumor necrosis factor type alpha-induced apoptosis. While partially degraded and unspliced transcripts of IER3 are found after virus infection in vitro, these transcripts are not found in vivo and do not generate a functional protein.

IER3, also known as IEX-1, may play a role in the ERK signaling pathway by inhibiting the dephosphorylation of ERK by phosphatase PP2A-PPP2R5C holoenzyme. It acts as an ERK downstream effector mediating survival. IER3 is part of the NUPR1/RELB/IER3 survival pathway and may contribute to the remarkable resistance of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma to cell stress, such as starvation or gemcitabine treatment.

IER3 is also known as DIF-2, DIF2, GLY96, IEX-1, IEX-1L, IEX1, PRG1.
