EFL1

Description

The EFL1 (elongation factor like GTPase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

EFL1 plays a crucial role in ribosome biogenesis and activation. It collaborates with SBDS to release EIF6 from 60S pre-ribosomes, a process driven by GTP. This step is essential for activating ribosomes, allowing them to assemble into 80S ribosomes and begin protein synthesis. EFL1 also facilitates the recycling of EIF6 back to the nucleus, where it participates in 60S rRNA processing and nuclear export. While EFL1 has a low intrinsic GTPase activity, it is significantly enhanced when it interacts with 60S ribosome subunits.

EFL1 is also known as EFTUD1, FAM42A, HsT19294, RIA1, SDS2.
