HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): The "Good" Cholesterol

Description

HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, is a type of cholesterol that is known as the "good" cholesterol. Unlike LDL ("bad" cholesterol), HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from the arteries and carries it back to the liver for disposal. Higher levels of HDL are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease.

Associated Diseases

Low levels of HDL are associated with an increased risk of developing:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • Coronary artery disease

Did you Know ?

According to the American Heart Association, only about 1 in 4 adults in the United States have optimal HDL levels.
