HBD

Description

The HBD (hemoglobin subunit delta) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The delta (HBD) and beta (HBB) genes are normally expressed in adults, with two alpha chains plus two beta chains forming HbA, which constitutes about 97% of total hemoglobin in healthy adults. Two alpha chains plus two delta chains form HbA2, comprising the remaining 3% of adult hemoglobin alongside HbF. Five beta-like globin genes are found within a 45 kb cluster on chromosome 11 in this order: 5' - epsilon – gamma-G – gamma-A – delta – beta - 3'. Mutations in the delta-globin gene are associated with Delta-thalassemia.

HBD is also known as HBK.
