HACD4

Description

The HACD4 (3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydratase 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

HACD4 catalyzes the third step in the elongation of long-chain fatty acids. This process, located in the endoplasmic reticulum, adds two carbons to the chain of long- and very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) per cycle. HACD4 specifically dehydrates the 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA intermediate into trans-2,3-enoyl-CoA during each elongation cycle. This activity contributes to the production of VLCFAs with varying chain lengths, which serve as precursors for various membrane lipids and lipid mediators.

HACD4 is also known as PTPLAD2.
