GRM5
Description
The GRM5 (glutamate metabotropic receptor 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) is an excitatory Gq-coupled G protein-coupled receptor primarily expressed on the postsynaptic sites of neurons. In humans, it is encoded by the GRM5 gene. Glutamate, the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, activates both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is crucial for normal brain function and disruptions can contribute to various neuropathologic conditions. mGluR5 belongs to the Group I metabotropic glutamate receptors, which activate phospholipase C. Research suggests a strong connection between mGluR5 and psychological disorders, including addiction and anxiety. Specifically, mGluR5 is implicated in the development of alcohol use disorder, playing a role in the development of behavioral sensitization towards ethanol in animal models.
