GLS2

Description

The GLS2 (glutaminase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

Glutaminase 2 (liver, mitochondrial) is a protein encoded by the GLS2 gene in humans. Located on chromosome 12 (12q13.3), the GLS2 gene contains 19 exons. GLS2 is part of the glutaminase family and functions as a mitochondrial phosphate-activated glutaminase. It catalyzes the breakdown of glutamine into glutamate and ammonia. While initially believed to be liver-specific, GLS2 has been found in other tissues. Alternative splicing produces different isoforms of the protein. GLS2 is linked to tumor progression and cancer. It negatively regulates the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and exhibits tumor suppression activity in human hepatocellular carcinoma. In glioblastoma cells, silencing of GLS and overexpression of GLS2 genes work together to reduce cell proliferation and viability.

GLS2 is also known as GA, GLS, LGA, hLGA.
