The GC gene product, also known as Vitamin D-binding protein (DBP), plays a crucial role in vitamin D metabolism by transporting and storing the vitamin. It also acts as a scavenger for extracellular G-actin, a protein involved in cell structure, and enhances the chemotactic activity of C5 alpha, a component of the immune system, attracting neutrophils to sites of inflammation. This protein also promotes macrophage activation, a key process in the immune response.
GC is also known as DBP, DBP-maf, DBP/GC, GRD3, Gc-MAF, GcMAF, HEL-S-51, VDB, VDBG, VDBP.
