GABRA6

Description

The GABRA6 (gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor subunit alpha6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha-6 is a protein encoded by the GABRA6 gene in humans. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain, acting at GABA-A receptors, which are ligand-gated chloride channels. The chloride conductance of these channels can be modulated by agents such as benzodiazepines that bind to the GABA-A receptor. At least 16 distinct subunits of GABA-A receptors have been identified. A genetic variant in the GABRA6 gene has been linked to the personality trait of neuroticism.

GABA, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain, regulates neuronal activity by binding to the GABA/benzodiazepine receptor, which then opens an integral chloride channel.
