FMO1

Description

The FMO1 (flavin containing dimethylaniline monoxygenase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

FMO1, encoded by the FMO1 gene, is an enzyme that catalyzes the N-oxidation of the diet-derived amino-trimethylamine (TMA). This process is subject to an inherited FMO3 polymorphism, leading to a small subpopulation with reduced TMA N-oxidation capacity and subsequent fish odor syndrome (Trimethylaminuria). There are three forms of the enzyme: FMO1 found in fetal liver, FMO2 found in adult liver, and FMO3. These genes are clustered in the 1q23-q25 region. FMO1, like other flavin-containing monooxygenases, is an NADPH-dependent flavoenzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of soft nucleophilic heteroatom centers in xenobiotics, such as pesticides and drugs.

FMO1 is also known as -.
