ESPL1

Description

The ESPL1 (extra spindle pole bodies like 1, separase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

ESPL1, also known as Separase, is a caspase-like protease that plays a crucial role in chromosome separation during cell division. It achieves this by cleaving the SCC1/RAD21 subunit of the cohesin complex at the beginning of anaphase. This cleavage allows sister chromatids to separate and move to opposite poles of the cell. ESPL1 remains inactive during most of the cell cycle through various regulatory mechanisms.

ESPL1 is also known as ESP1, SEPA.
