Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit B (eIF3b) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EIF3B gene.
EIF3B is a component of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF-3) complex, which is essential for several steps in the initiation of protein synthesis. This complex interacts with the 40S ribosome and helps recruit other initiation factors (eIF-1, eIF-1A, eIF-2:GTP:methionyl-tRNAi, and eIF-5) to form the 43S pre-initiation complex (43S PIC). It also promotes mRNA recruitment to the 43S PIC and facilitates the scanning of mRNA for the AUG start codon. Additionally, the eIF-3 complex plays a role in the disassembly and recycling of ribosomal complexes after protein synthesis, preventing premature assembly of the ribosomal subunits. EIF3B is involved in the selective translation of mRNAs associated with cell proliferation, including those involved in cell cycle regulation, differentiation, and apoptosis. This protein utilizes different RNA stem-loop binding mechanisms to either activate or repress translation.
