ELOVL1

Description

The ELOVL1 (ELOVL fatty acid elongase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

ELOVL1 is an enzyme that catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the elongation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). This process occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum and involves the addition of two carbons to the fatty acid chain per cycle. ELOVL1 exhibits activity towards both saturated and monounsaturated acyl-CoA substrates, with the highest activity towards C22:0 acyl-CoA. It plays a role in the production of VLCFAs of different chain lengths, which are important precursors of membrane lipids and lipid mediators. ELOVL1 is essential for the synthesis of saturated C24:0 and monounsaturated C24:1 sphingolipids. It also indirectly inhibits the activity of RPE65 by producing VLCFAs.

ELOVL1 is also known as CGI-88, IKSHD, Ssc1.
