FERMT1 : FERM domain containing kindlin 1

Description

The FERMT1 (FERM domain containing kindlin 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

The FERMT1 gene provides instructions for making a protein called kindlin-1, which is found in epithelial cells. Kindlin-1 plays a crucial role in keratinocytes, the major component of the epidermis. It is part of cell structures called focal adhesions, which link the cell's cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. This linking is known as cell-matrix adhesion. Kindlin-1 attaches to and activates integrins, which directly connect the cytoskeleton with the extracellular matrix. As part of focal adhesions, Kindlin-1 is involved in cell growth and division (proliferation) and the movement (migration) of cells.

FERMT1 is also known as C20orf42, DTGCU2, KIND1, UNC112A, URP1.
