The CYYR1 (cysteine and tyrosine rich 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

Cysteine and tyrosine-rich protein 1 is a protein encoded by the CYYR1 gene located on human chromosome 21. Its function is not yet understood. The protein is a single-pass transmembrane protein with four exons and a large intron. It contains a unique cysteine and tyrosine-rich domain, which is conserved across vertebrates. Bioinformatic analysis suggests the protein has a molecular weight of 16.6 kdal and an isoelectric point of 8.28. It consists of 153 amino acids and includes a signal peptide, a transmembrane domain, and a poly-proline domain. While there are no known paralogs, CYYR1 shows high conservation across vertebrates. Interestingly, CYYR1 was found to increase glutathione (GSH) levels in yeast cells lacking the primary GSH uptake transporter, suggesting a possible role in GSH regulation.

The specific function of CYYR1 protein is currently unknown. However, research suggests it might play a role in glutathione (GSH) levels, as it was shown to increase GSH in yeast cells lacking the primary GSH uptake transporter. Despite this observation, CYYR1 is not naturally found in yeast, indicating that its function in human cells requires further investigation.
