CYGB

Description

The CYGB (cytoglobin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

CYGB may refer to:

CYGB is a multifunctional globin that contains a hexacoordinated heme iron. It is involved in various reactions depending on the redox condition of the cell and oxygen availability. It functions as a nitric oxide dioxygenase (NOD) under normoxic conditions, but under hypoxic conditions, it acts as a nitrite (NO2) reductase (NiR). CYGB also exhibits peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities, detoxifying reactive oxygen species and protecting cells against oxidative stress. It can bind dioxygen with low affinity and might function as an oxygen sensor but does not act as a respiratory oxygen carrier.

CYGB is also known as HGB, NOD, STAP.
