CYBRD1

Description

The CYBRD1 (cytochrome b reductase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

CYBRD1 is a plasma membrane reductase that utilizes cytoplasmic ascorbate as an electron donor to reduce extracellular Fe(3+) to Fe(2+). This process is crucial for dietary iron absorption at the brush border of duodenal enterocytes, as it generates the divalent form of iron required for transport into enterocytes. CYBRD1 also plays a role in extracellular ascorbate regeneration by erythrocytes in blood by reducing monodehydro-L-ascorbate. Additionally, it may function as a ferrireductase in airway epithelial cells and as a cupric transmembrane reductase.

CYBRD1 is also known as CYB561A2, DCYTB, FRRS3.
