Description
The CSE1L (chromosome segregation 1 like) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.
CSE1L, also known as Exportin-2 (XPO2), is a nuclear export receptor that facilitates the movement of importin-alpha from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. After import substrates are released into the nucleoplasm, CSE1L binds to importin-alpha and the GTPase Ran in its active GTP-bound form within the nucleus. This trimeric complex then docks with the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through interactions with nucleoporins. Upon entering the cytoplasm, the complex disassembles as Ran-GTP hydrolyzes to Ran-GDP, a process mediated by RANBP1 and RANGAP1. This release allows CSE1L to return to the nucleus and participate in another round of transport. The directional movement of nuclear export is attributed to the asymmetric distribution of Ran's GTP- and GDP-bound forms between the cytoplasm and nucleus.
