The COX7A2 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7A2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

COX7A2 (Cytochrome c oxidase polypeptide 7A2, mitochondrial) is an enzyme encoded by the COX7A2 gene. It is a subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the final complex in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. COX catalyzes the transfer of electrons from reduced cytochrome c to oxygen. The complex contains three catalytic subunits encoded by mitochondrial genes and multiple structural subunits encoded by nuclear genes, including COX7A2. COX7A2 encodes polypeptide 2 of subunit VIIa, present in muscle and nonmuscle tissues. Subunit VIIa also includes polypeptide 1 (muscle isoform) and a related protein found in all tissues. The COX7A2 gene may have several pseudogenes.

COX7A2 is a subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV, CIV), the final enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. This chain consists of three multisubunit complexes: succinate dehydrogenase (complex II, CII), ubiquinol-cytochrome c oxidoreductase (cytochrome b-c1 complex, complex III, CIII), and cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV, CIV). Together, these complexes transfer electrons from NADH and succinate to molecular oxygen, generating an electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane that drives ATP synthesis. Cytochrome c oxidase specifically catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water. It receives electrons from reduced cytochrome c in the intermembrane space, transferring them through a series of copper and heme cofactors to its active site, the binuclear center (BNC). The BNC utilizes these electrons and protons from the mitochondrial matrix to reduce oxygen to water.
