CORT

Description

The CORT (cortistatin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The CORT gene encodes precortistatin, a protein that is processed into cortistatin-17 and cortistatin-29. Cortistatin-17, the active form, is a neuropeptide structurally similar to somatostatin. It is found in inhibitory neurons of the cerebral cortex and shares many properties with somatostatin, including the ability to suppress neuronal activity. However, it also has unique effects such as inducing slow-wave sleep, reducing locomotor activity, and activating specific cation channels. Cortistatin binds to sites in the cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala, potentially playing a role in regulating these brain regions.

CORT is also known as CST-14, CST-17, CST-29, SST2.
