CMAS

Description

The CMAS (cytidine monophosphate N-acetylneuraminic acid synthetase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

CMAS may stand for: N-acylneuraminate cytidylyltransferase, CMP-N-acetylneuraminic acid synthase

This enzyme activates N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuNAc) by converting it to cytidine 5'-monophosphate N-acetylneuraminic acid (CMP-NeuNAc). CMP-NeuNAc is a crucial substrate for adding sialic acid to molecules. CMAS can also work with other similar molecules like Neu5Gc and KDN.

CMAS is also known as CSS.
