Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD)
Description:
Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inherited immune deficiency disorder where phagocytic cells (neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages) have a functional defect in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS are essential for destroying invading microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. As a result of this defect, individuals with CGD are highly susceptible to recurrent and severe infections that can be difficult to treat with conventional antibiotics.
Associated Diseases:
The most common infections associated with CGD include:
- Pulmonary infections (pneumonia, lung abscesses)
- Skin infections (cellulitis, abscesses)
- Gastrointestinal infections (colitis, perianal abscesses)
- Systemic infections (osteomyelitis, sepsis)
- Fungal infections (aspergillosis, candidiasis)
Did you Know ?
The estimated prevalence of CGD worldwide is approximately 1 in 200,000 to 250,000 individuals.
