Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD)

Description:

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inherited immune deficiency disorder where phagocytic cells (neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages) have a functional defect in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS are essential for destroying invading microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. As a result of this defect, individuals with CGD are highly susceptible to recurrent and severe infections that can be difficult to treat with conventional antibiotics.

The most common infections associated with CGD include:

  • Pulmonary infections (pneumonia, lung abscesses)
  • Skin infections (cellulitis, abscesses)
  • Gastrointestinal infections (colitis, perianal abscesses)
  • Systemic infections (osteomyelitis, sepsis)
  • Fungal infections (aspergillosis, candidiasis)
