CENPN

Description

The CENPN (centromere protein N) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

Centromere protein N is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CENPN gene.

CENPN is a crucial component of the CENPA-NAC complex, which is essential for assembling kinetochore proteins, enabling proper mitotic progression, and ensuring accurate chromosome segregation during cell division. The CENPA-NAC complex acts as a recruiter for the CENPA-CAD complex, potentially playing a role in incorporating newly synthesized CENPA into centromeres. CENPN stands out as the first protein to bind specifically to CENPA nucleosomes, and this direct interaction is absolutely vital for centromere assembly. CENPN's role extends to chromosome congression, effectively aligning chromosomes on the metaphase plate.

CENPN is also known as BM039, C16orf60, CENP-N, ICEN32.
