CELA3B

Description

The CELA3B (chymotrypsin like elastase 3B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

CELA3B gene encodes for the protein chymotrypsin-like elastase family member 3B, also known as elastase-3B, protease E, or fecal elastase. This enzyme is a serine protease that belongs to the elastase subfamily and primarily functions in the digestion of proteins within the intestine. While elastases typically break down elastin, CELA3B exhibits minimal elastolytic activity. Instead, it preferentially cleaves proteins after alanine residues. CELA3B plays a role in the intestinal transport and metabolism of cholesterol. Although CELA3B has been historically referred to as protease E and elastase 1, these terms are often used interchangeably with elastase 3A. Importantly, the amount of CELA3B excreted in fecal material is frequently utilized as a clinical indicator of pancreatic function.

CELA3B is also known as CBPP, ELA3B.
