CBX8

Description

The CBX8 (chromobox 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

Chromobox protein homolog 8 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CBX8 gene. CBX8 has been shown to interact with RING1 and MLLT1.

CBX8 plays a crucial role in maintaining the silenced state of many genes, including Hox genes, during development. It does this as part of a multiprotein complex called PRC1-like, which is a member of the Polycomb group (PcG). The PRC1 complex acts by modifying histones, specifically by adding a single ubiquitin molecule to histone H2A at position Lys-119. This modification alters the chromatin structure, making the gene less likely to be expressed and ensuring that the silencing is inherited by daughter cells.

CBX8 is also known as PC3, RC1.
