COL5A2 : collagen type V alpha 2 chain

Description

The COL5A2 (collagen type V alpha 2 chain) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

The COL5A2 gene provides instructions for making the alpha 2(V) chain, a component of type V collagen. Type V collagen strengthens and supports various tissues, including skin, ligaments, bones, tendons, and muscles. It is formed by combining three chains: either three pro-α1(V) chains or two pro-α1(V) chains and one pro-α2(V) chain. The resulting procollagen molecules are processed outside the cell into mature collagen, which then arranges itself into long, thin fibrils alongside type I collagen. Type V collagen regulates the width of these fibrils and is thought to control the assembly of other collagen types in various tissues.

COL5A2 is also known as EDSC, EDSCL2.
