Description
The FOXE3 (forkhead box E3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
FOXE3, also known as FREAC-8, is a protein encoded by the FOXE3 gene located on chromosome 1. It functions as a forkhead-box transcription factor essential for proper lens formation. FOXE3 is expressed in the lens epithelium after birth. During lens development, FOXE3 plays a crucial role in forming the lens placode, the precursor to the lens. It regulates the expression of Cryaα, controlling the solubility of the crystalline protein complex in the developing lens. Reduced solubility can lead to cataracts due to lens crystallization. FOXE3 also regulates Prox1, responsible for cell cycle progression. As FOXE3 expression decreases, Prox1 expression increases, leading to reduced cell proliferation in the anterior lens. Additionally, FOXE3 regulates platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α (Pdgfrα) expression, which controls lens fiber differentiation within the epithelium of specific lens regions. Defects in FOXE3 function are associated with anterior segment dysgenesis (ASD).
FOXE3 is a transcription factor that regulates lens epithelial cell growth by controlling proliferation, apoptosis, and the cell cycle. During lens development, FOXE3 maintains the balance between lens fiber cells and anterior lens epithelium cells by regulating proliferation and differentiation. FOXE3 also ensures proper lens vesicle closure and separation from the ectoderm. Additionally, FOXE3 regulates the expression of DNAJB1, a protein essential for the development of the anterior segment of the eye.
