CALD1

Description

The CALD1 (caldesmon 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

CALD1 encodes caldesmon, a calmodulin-binding protein that regulates smooth muscle and nonmuscle contraction. It binds to calmodulin, actin, tropomyosin, myosin, and phospholipids. CALD1 inhibits the actin-tropomyosin activated myosin MgATPase and mediates calcium-dependent inhibition of smooth muscle contraction. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms are produced through alternative splicing. In diagnostic immunochemistry, caldesmon is a marker for smooth muscle differentiation.

CALD1 is also known as CDM, H-CAD, HCAD, L-CAD, LCAD, NAG22, h-CD.
