Description:
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition that causes inflammation and damage to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The two main types of IBD are:
- Ulcerative colitis (UC): Affects only the innermost lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum.
- Crohn's disease (CD): Can affect any part of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus.
Associated Diseases:
IBD can increase the risk of developing other health conditions, including:
- Skin disorders, such as psoriasis and erythema nodosum
- Joint pain and inflammation (spondyloarthritis)
- Liver disease (primary sclerosing cholangitis)
- Eye problems, such as uveitis
