BCAN

Description

The BCAN (brevican) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

Brevican core protein is a protein encoded by the BCAN gene in humans. It belongs to the lectican protein family and is found on the surface of neurons in the brain. The expression of the BCAN gene in melanocytic cells may be regulated by MITF.

Brevican is thought to play a role in the development of the nervous system after birth, both during the final stages of differentiation and in the mature brain. It might also contribute to the stability of interactions between hyaluronan (HA) and other brain proteoglycans.

BCAN is also known as BEHAB, CSPG7.
