ATOX1
Description
The ATOX1 (antioxidant 1 copper chaperone) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
ATOX1 is a copper metallochaperone protein involved in copper homeostasis in humans. It delivers copper from the cytosol to the ATP7A and ATP7B transporters, which are essential for copper transport to the trans-Golgi network or secretory vesicles. ATOX1's ability to bind free metals helps protect cells from reactive oxygen species and mismetallation of metalloproteins. It is a conserved protein found in various eukaryotes, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, where it is known as ATX1.
ATOX1 is also known as ATX1, HAH1.
