Description

The ATG2B (autophagy related 2B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 14.

ATG2B is a lipid transfer protein that is essential for both autophagosome formation and the regulation of lipid droplet morphology and dispersion. It plays a crucial role in tethering the edge of the isolation membrane (IM) to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mediating direct lipid transfer from ER to IM for IM expansion. ATG2B binds to the ER exit site (ERES), the membrane source for autophagosome formation, and extracts phospholipids from this source. These phospholipids are then transferred to ATG9 (ATG9A or ATG9B) at the IM, contributing to membrane expansion. The lipid transfer activity of ATG2B is enhanced by WDR45/WIPI4, which promotes ATG2B's association with phosphatidylinositol 3-monophosphate (PI3P)-containing membranes. This protein has been shown to interact with WDR45/WIPI4.
