Description
The ATF3 (activating transcription factor 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
ATF3 is a transcription factor belonging to the mammalian activating transcription factor/cAMP responsive element-binding (CREB) protein family. It exists in two isoforms: a longer isoform that represses transcription and a shorter isoform (deltaZip2) that lacks the DNA-binding domain and activates transcription by sequestering inhibitory co-factors. ATF3 is induced by stress in various tissues and is a marker of regeneration after injury to dorsal root ganglion neurons. It promotes regeneration of peripheral neurons but not central nervous system neurons. ATF3 interacts with several other proteins, including C-jun, DDIT3, JunD, P53, and SMAD3.
ATF3 binds to the cAMP response element (CRE), a DNA sequence found in many viral and cellular promoters. It can repress transcription by stabilizing inhibitory cofactors at the promoter.
