Aquaporin-7 (AQP-7) is a protein in humans encoded by the AQP7 gene. It belongs to the aquaporin/major intrinsic protein (MIP) family, a group of water-selective membrane channels. AQP-7 is closely related to AQP3 and AQP9, forming a possible subfamily. It shares a chromosomal location with AQP3, suggesting a possible aquaporin cluster at 9p13. AQP-7 facilitates the transport of water, glycerol, and urea. It may be crucial for thermoregulation through perspiration and sperm function.
AQP7 forms a channel that allows water, glycerol, and urea to move across cell membranes. It is particularly important for glycerol transport, especially during lipid breakdown. AQP7 facilitates glycerol export from fat cells, which is then used by the liver to produce glucose and maintain blood sugar levels. It also plays a role in glycerol reabsorption in the kidneys.
