API5

Description

The API5 (apoptosis inhibitor 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The human gene API5 encodes the protein Apoptosis inhibitor 5. This protein prevents apoptosis after growth factor deprivation. It suppresses the transcription factor E2F1-induced apoptosis and interacts with, and negatively regulates acinus, a nuclear factor involved in apoptotic DNA fragmentation. Its depletion enhances the cytotoxic action of chemotherapeutic drugs. Crystal structure of API5 exhibited the function for protein-protein interaction. Diseases associated with API5 include colon adenocarcinoma, and cervical cancer.

API5 is an antiapoptotic factor that plays a role in protein assembly. It negatively regulates ACIN1 by binding to it and suppressing its cleavage from CASP3, thus inhibiting ACIN1-mediated DNA fragmentation. It also efficiently suppresses E2F1-induced apoptosis. Depletion of API5 enhances the cytotoxic action of chemotherapeutic drugs.

API5 is also known as AAC-11, AAC11.
