ALKBH3

Description

The ALKBH3 (alkB homolog 3, alpha-ketoglutarate dependent dioxygenase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

ALKBH3 is a dioxygenase that removes methyl groups from DNA and RNA. It specifically targets 1-methyladenosine (m1A), a modification found in both DNA and RNA. ALKBH3 has a strong preference for single-stranded DNA but can also work on double-stranded DNA in conjunction with ASCC3, a protein that unwinds DNA to make it accessible. ALKBH3 is also involved in repairing alkylated DNA, including 1-methyladenosine (m1A) and 3-methylcytosine (m3C). In RNA, ALKBH3 demethylates N(1)-methyladenosine (m1A), a modification often found in the 5'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of messenger RNA (mRNA). This enzyme requires molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate, and iron to function.

ALKBH3 is also known as ABH3, DEPC-1, DEPC1, PCA1, hABH3.
