AKIRIN1

Description

The AKIRIN1 (akirin 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

AKIRIN1 is a molecular adapter protein that acts as a bridge between other proteins. It plays a role in skeletal muscle development, acting as a signal transducer for myostatin (MSTN) during muscle regeneration and myogenesis. This protein may also regulate chemotaxis of macrophages and myoblasts by rearranging the actin cytoskeleton, leading to enhanced lamellipodia formation through a PI3 kinase-dependent pathway. Unlike its homolog AKIRIN2, AKIRIN1 is not involved in nuclear import of proteasomes.

AKIRIN1 is also known as C1orf108, STRF2.
