ABHD10

Description of ABHD10

What is ABHD10?

ABHD10, also known as α/β hydrolase domain-containing protein 10, is a gene that encodes an enzyme involved in lipid metabolism. This enzyme plays a crucial role in regulating the levels of certain signaling molecules in the brain.

Structure and Function

ABHD10 is a member of the α/β hydrolase superfamily and contains a conserved catalytic triad of amino acids. The enzyme hydrolyzes ester bonds in various lipid substrates, including endocannabinoids and fatty acid amides. Endocannabinoids are molecules that are similar to the active ingredient in marijuana and have important signaling functions in the brain.

Associated Diseases

Mutations in the ABHD10 gene have been linked to several neuropsychiatric and metabolic disorders, including:

  • Schizophrenia: ABHD10 is the most consistently identified genetic risk factor for schizophrenia. Variants in the ABHD10 gene have been associated with an increased risk of the disorder.
  • Bipolar disorder: Studies have found that ABHD10 variants may also contribute to the development of bipolar disorder.
  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome: ABHD10 has been implicated in the regulation of appetite and energy metabolism. Mutations in the gene have been associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.

Did you Know ?

According to a large-scale genome-wide association study, the most common risk-associated variant in the ABHD10 gene is present in approximately 25% of the population of European ancestry. This suggests that ABHD10 variations are relatively common and may contribute to a significant proportion of neuropsychiatric and metabolic disorders.
